In sunny tropical climates like the Mediterranean Coast, the deserts of the Middle East, or island chains dotting the Pacific, it is common to find homes painted a brilliant white color. Besides giving these neighborhoods a polished look, that whitewashing effect has an important benefit: to block the sun’s rays from heating each home’s interior spaces. There’s a modern version of that time-honored technique, adding technology and serious energy efficiency to the equation. The modern version is a product called COOLWALL® by TEX•COTE™. One of the many benefits of this revolutionary heat-reflecting surface finish is that it doesn’t only come in white; it is available in hundreds of colors to match existing paintwork or to add a dramatic new appearance to home exteriors.
How Does COOLWALL® by TEX•COTE™ Work?
COOLWALL® was developed by in-house chemists and engineers at TEX•COTE™. The company borrowed technology already in use by the U.S. military to reduce the “heat signature” of its vehicles. The heat signature refers to the amount of heat absorbed by the sun; untreated vehicles subjected to solar energy are more visible to thermal-imaging equipment.
COOLWALL® uses an infrared-redirecting technology called Kynar°. The coating system reflects solar heat by changing the invisible part of the light spectrum (infrared rays). This can be accomplished without changing the color of the coating, which is why COOLWALL® comes in so many color choices (unlike competitors’ exterior coating systems).
After application of the coating, homeowners can save over 20% on cooling costs. In many laboratory tests, COOLWALL® was shown to lower exterior wall surface temperatures by as much as 40 degrees as compared to untreated surfaces. Reducing the amount of thermal energy absorbed by exterior walls means that the heating and cooling system doesn’t have to work as hard. This, in turn, saves homeowners money on utility bills! By using less electricity, homeowners also reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions.
In addition to lowering energy costs, COOLWALL® exterior coatings also help seal cracks and gaps in exterior surfaces. This can improve the efficiency of heating and cooling systems by eliminating drafts. The elastomeric coating also offers many years of weather protection for the home’s exterior. And, thanks to Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) legislation, many states offer low-cost financing to help homeowners apply COOLWALL® coatings to their homes. Energy-efficient home improvements like heat-reflecting coatings are covered under this financing strategy.
A certified COOLWALL® installer can add a great new look to your home by matching existing paint palettes or going with something bold and new. In no time, you’ll be saving money on utility costs while helping the environment.
